Les Halles Saint-Géry

Les Halles Saint-Géry is a place with lots of history and is worth visiting if you're in Brussels. The Gothic church of Saint-Gery stood here until its demolition between 1798 and 1801 during the French regime. On its site, a pyramid-shaped fountain was built in 1802, and markets were organised outdoors. In 1881 the construction of the Les Halles market started, which remained active until 1977 when it was closed after years of gradual abandonment by the shopkeepers. The building is a fine example of the architecture of the period. It's a covered market in iron and red brick done in the Flemish Neo-Renaissance style.
