An Amazing Place
Napoleon described the "Gulf of Poets" - also known as the Gulf of La Spezia - as the most beautiful gulf in the universe, not only for its charm and beauty, but also for its huge military potential. Although Napoleon's idea to construct a military complex never played out, but the Savoy took did in fact decide to build a large complex where the boats of the new Italian state would be constructed during the unification process (this year marks the 150th anniversary of the event: 'https://www.italiaunita150.it/').
So in 1869 he opened the La Spezia arsenal and military installations, which still remain. Since then, the maritime and marina (merchant marine, shipbuilding and, more recently, cruise tourism) have become the economic and social engine of the La Spezia Gulf, although now it's become more popular for its tourist attractions. Many poets found their home here (Shelley, Lord Byron Wagner, Montale) and were all inspired by the beauty and romance of the cove Lerici, Tellaro, Porto Venere and other small villages are also on the sea and surrounded by green hills. The beauty of the Gulf is breathtaking, as well as each and every one of the villages. A visit here is almost obligatory if you plan to spend a few days in the region of Liguria!
