A Curiosity of Madrid

Excellent

It’s 3 pm, and my journey through Las Letras neighborhood has brought me to Plaza de las Cortes. I’m hungry and thinking where I could eat and rest for a while. Meanwhile, the impressive, white and sophisticated plaza fills me with peace while, suddenly, the sound of bells grabs my attention.

All the people in the square look at each other as if thinking, where does this sound come from? Someone says: up there! We’re all surprised to see a group of automats come out form the façade of the Groupama Building.
It turns out that Madrid was one of the few European capitals that did not have a carillon that attracted the curious eyes of tourists, so in 1993 someone came up with the great idea to create one. The carillon is simple, with a sort of shabby touch, characteristic of the capital, but it’s surprising to see, especially due to its location. It would make more sense in the Plaza Mayor, for example.

I sat there looking at the figures of Goya, Cayetana de Alba, King Carlos III, and Pedro Romero. All of them were designed by Mingote and for two whole minutes, they make the Plaza come to a halt, even the lions seem to be pushed into the background. The impressive statue of Cervantes seems to laugh and everyone is surprised to find something like this in the center of Madrid.

The carrousel of people can be contemplated every day at 12 noon, 3 pm and 8 pm. There is nothing to do but enjoy the curiosities with which Madrid surprises us. Enjoy it along one of the most beautiful buildings of the area.
