Church where the most important religious holiday takes place

The Church of Bom Jesus de la Cruz is one of the main attractions of the square of Largo da Porta Nova, and has been declared Property of Public Interest by IPPAR. The origin of the temple is linked to the appearance of a cross of black earth at the fairgrounds in the year 1504. Constructed there was a tiny chapel with the image of the Lord of the Cross, by a rich merchant who imported it from Flanders. Later he constructed the church, authorship of Lisbon architect João Antunes, which opened in the year 1710. This is where the most important religious holiday of Barcelos takes place: The Festa das Cruzes, in early September.

It is quirky, with rounded shapes. Its outside combines decorative elements or granite in Baroque style. It has a large granite dome 10 meters in diameter. Inside, its most notable features are carved gilt decoration (work by Miguel Coelho), the likes of Lord Cross life size (XVI century), and the 18th century tile panels, made by João Neto, with religious scenes and motifs.
