Jano Montano
American Gothic inspired sculpture
American Gothic is an American painting by Grant Wood that I've always liked and is housed in the Modern Art Museum of Chicago. It's an icon of American culture represented and caricatured at millions of locations (like the credits of the Desperate Housewives series). It depicts a peasant couple posing in a cheerful and friendly manner and remains a symbol of the American heartland. I was amused during my last trip when I saw this recently installed sculpture in Pioneer Court, a space located at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and the Chicago River. I've always seen works there and it's constantly being remodeled.
This new sculpture is a hyper-realistic representation of the box and carries the rather ironic name 'God Bless America.' The only difference between the sculpture and the painting is that there is a suitcase covered with stickers of places traveled. The sculpture is very successful and the resemblance to the picture is amazing. For its size and realism, its a very impressive likeness.
