Best short hike in Montana?
Glacier Lake is an outstanding and beautiful lake in the Mission Mountains; it's slightly down-canyon from Turquoise Lake, which I described a few weeks ago. While the closest glacier is a few miles away, the water here is clear and plenty cold nonetheless. Start the hike from the end of Kraft Creek Road, aka Forest Road #561. The trail, which is well-signed, is relatively level and passes small creeks in two bridges and forges past a lot of huckleberry bushes. Turn left at the junction with Trail 742 and continue on to the lake. Trail distances vary by writer, but plan on about 2 easy miles each way.
The lake is in protected wilderness, so only foot or horse travel is permitted, and there is no camping allowed within 400 yards of the lakeshore. Please also note areas closed for restoration and revegetation, and beware of bears, including grizzlies, in this area.
