1 review of Gironde River

Unique ecosystem

Excellent

One of the destinations on our trip to France was the Gironde Estuary. It passes through the village of Saint-Estephe . South of Charente-Maritime, The Gironde estuary is the largest in Europe. An assembly of maritime heritage and military of the first order and a unique ecosystem. There is no other continental river where there are wild sturgeon. The ecosystem characterized by a few species but many of them. In it you can find the white shrimp, the sand goby (native fish) and sturgeon. This turns out to be the only natural sturgeon species found in Western Europe. In the twenties caviar production began, which reached up to five tons per year during the fifties.

Today, because the danger of extinction, the species is protected. The Gironde estuary is also a very important place of migration and nesting. The area is inhabited by herons, cormorants and black-headed gulls, among other species. A unique thing about the waters is a strange color due to the amount of sediment and the bottom is mud.
