A special travel experience
The traditional Japanese inns are called "ryokan", and this is an example of one in Kyoto. They are structures made of wood, glass, and bamboo, with paper screens and tatami mats. Other ryokan are more modern, but the Japanese traditions, like the need to take off your shoes on entry, are observed everywhere. The meals are served on low tables, and the beds are also close to the floor: they are more like mattresses. The traditional kimono, the "yukata", must be worn during your stay.
