Day of the Dead in Guatemala
On November 1st in Sumpango Sacatepequez, the locals celebrate the Day of the Dead. For the celebration, people spend the whole year constructing huge kites, some so big that they could never actually fly, as well as smaller kites which carry notes for the dead to the heavens. These kites are also said to protect against evil spirits.
People in Sumpango are mostly Kaqchikel, a Mayan minority in Guatemala. They believe that one day the dead may come down to Earth and therefore communicate with their deceased ancestors. It's a very cheerful party that lasts for two full days with loud music, lots of food, and dancing.
