2 reviews of Alejandro Geraldini's Tomb

A remarkable tomb

Inside the Cathedral of Santo Domingo, there are numerous tombs and funerary monuments, and the grave of Geraldini is one of the most remarkable. It is located in the Chapel of Christ of the Agona, whose name comes from the magnificent Baroque polychrome carving of a crucifixion found in one of the side walls. It was built by order of Diego del Rio, who came to the island in 1517 to prepare for the arrival of Bishop Alejandro Geraldini. The chapel is covered by a stone dome decorated with garlands of fruit and leaves. Inside the monument are the remains of Santo Domingo's first resident bishop, Alejandro Geraldini.

It is ark-shaped, with two lions at his feet. In the chapel, there are also a thousand commemorative crosses which celebrate the fifth centenary of the evangelization of the New World, and blessed by John Paul II on his second visit to the country in 1984.
