Art, Elegance, and Entertainment
Kyoto is the home of the Geisha and Maiko (apprentice Geisha), although they used to be all throughout Japan they originated in Kyoto (then the capital of the country) and where the most prestigious schools always were. Although it's sometimes associated with prostitution, the work socially is quite different. It's much more focused on art, elegance and entertainment than sex (it is true that you could consummate on occasion, but not always) the Geisha and Maiko are slowly disappearing. Their decline began in World War II and there are now less than 1000 in all of Japan. However in some Kyoto classic neighborhoods, such as Ponto-cho and Gion, you can still see some.
