Interesting day visit to Livingston with the Garifuna people
After an interesting day visiting the Rio Dulce Canyon and the Castle of San Felipe, we went to Livingston, home of the Garifuna culture. The Garifuna are an ethnic community, mixed Amerindian and African slaves, who came here in the 17th century to work in the plantations. They only live in this part of Guatemala and Honduras. All culture has been declared by UNESCO aMasterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. This is starting to be a thing of interest, and in most hotels in the city they have a dance show to show their music and dances. It was organized in the restaurant and lounge, but caught us by surprise.
They are interesting dances, and all have their meaning: In the sambai they make moves like a ship sailing, the Punta is a festive dance, the group danced Jungujugu, the yancunu is a representation of a battle against the English ... The instruments they play are made by craftsmen: drums, maracas, conch shell, marimbas, guitar ... The sound is similar to reggae, but among Caribbean and African. Actually, it was a curious spectacle, and especially after, when we learned its meaning.
