a UNESCO World Heritage site
The Calnic Fortress is a UNESCO World Heritage site, together with the other churches in the region. It was constructed in the 13th Century by the Saxons. They began in the year 1270 after a military victory nearby. It was then the residence of the mayor of Calnic a nobleman, ve built the two towers and a circular guard path 4 feet off the ground. During the 15th and 16th Century, it was a military fortress with an army barracks. After the year 1700, the place became a defensive fortress, where the inhabitants used to take refuge in the event of an attack. There are food storage parlours, and there is also a meeting place for celebrations and worship in the church of the Saxon village community.
The fort was renovated in the 60s, and is now run by a partnership, which explains why it is in better shape than the public castles.
