The Alliance Française Split aims to spread French culture but also promote cultural exchanges between France and other nations. It has been teaching French in over 130 countries since 1883, and receives 400,000 students a year. The Alliance Française Split was founded in 1922, but was closed during the war when Split was under Italian occupation. It reopened in 1947 as a branch of the French Institute in Zagreb.
