The old hippie district of Kathmandu
Little remains of this once-vibrant area that, in the late 60's and 70's, was home to hippies from all over the world. Here cannabis was legalised, and people came to get in touch with Asian spirituality, which was in fashion during that time. Jhhonchen Tole became known as the Freak Street. Although the street still has cheap accommodation and places where you can eat for just a few rupees, the backpacker fashion has moved on to the nearby neighbuorhood of Thamel, which is much busier and far less decrepit-looking. In Jhhonchen Tole you'll see a few ramshackle tents and some elderly hippies still "hanging out".
