No frills fountain

This fountain is located in the town of Periana, and in antiquity, channeled water from the Cantarranas stream. Its aesthetic is simple, consisting of straight lines and no frills, only a glass niche for an image of San Isidro. At its bottom there is a gate that leads to the spring and four pipes that discharge into a carved limestone pools which in turn drain into a huge trough. The rightmost pipe is embedded into a figurehead with a caption "Year 1875". The main body of the fountain and the basin are separated by a wrought iron railing. This fountain dates from the Middle Ages, when a group of Mozarabic settlers settled by this abundant source of water, using it as a trough and resting place for cattle moving through the area.

At one time, this source was so important for the Catholic Monarchs in the late fifteenth century, that it was assigned a plot of 12 acres of land, and reports were sent directly to the king about the livestock that passed through. The surplus water flowing down the stream, resulted in a flooded area known as La Laguna, where centuries later, public toilets were built. With the passing of time, the creek was vaulted, the environment urbanised and the fountain acquired great social importance, becoming a public meeting place.
