Former Hospital

The building of the former Hospital of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, is also known as the Hospital de Sancho de Urdanibia. After the destruction of Irun in 1638, Sancho de Urdanibia donated part of his inheritance to build a shelter-hospital. It is in Plaza de Urdanibia (popularly known as "Moscú") in the old part. Years ago it ceased to be a hospital and it now houses inside the city euskaltegi (where people come to learn Basque). The ground floor has been restored and you can enjoy a permanent exhibition of some works by the Irundarra painter Menchu Gal and temporary exhibitions of other artists.

Menchu Gal received many awards throughout her life and could proudly boast being the first woman to receive the National Painting Prize in 1960. This exhibit will be provisional until the new civic center Palmera-Montero is built.
