Forest of Steles

Contrails are small monuments in the shape of small pedestals or decorated tombstones. They can be funeral or commemorative in character. In Xian, there are many of them together in what has been called forest trails. Some are animal-shaped, some little monsters or dragons carved in rock, or resting on turtles. They are show several centuries' history of poetry and Chinese calligraphy.
