The abbey can be found right in the heart of a typically Mediterranean landscape that's dominated by cypress, pine and boxwood trees. The Abbey's origins date back to the late eleventh century. After adopting Benedictine rule, Fontfroide joins the mid-twelfth century, to the order of "Citeaux". During the Crusade against the Albigensians, Fontfroide is affirmed as orthodox Catholic bastion against the Cathars.
