A strange place
There are places in Naples which mix the sacred and the profane, and this is one of them - the cemetery in the Rione Sanita. Today it's both a place of worship, and macabre fascination. The cemetery sits in what was once an old quarry, and was converted to its current purpose in the 1600's. For four centuries, it has been the final resting place for those who could not afford a proper burial. Today, there are at least 40,000 buried here, and it's said that there are bones in the ground at least four feet deep. The Fontanelle cemetery is open daily, except Wednesdays, from 10 to 17.
