4 reviews of Figueira da Foz

Cities of Portugal

Figueira da Foz is one of the largest cities found in this part of Beiras, Portugal. Here is where the Mondego river passes Coimbra and ends in the Atlantic Ocean. This bend is spectacular and is well maintained. There are numerous fishing boats around that give it a more authentic feel and add beauty to the area. Figueira da Foz has several areas. One is the marina which is surprisingly quite large and modern. It´s great for playing sports or checking out the spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean. The port is always full of people and tourists so there are many bars and restaurants. The old town of the city is particularly interesting.

It is by the sea and it´s like you´re in a different place as it still retains the tradition and architecture of the small coastal villages of Portugal. The facades of the houses are beautiful, as many of them are made with colored tiles (usually blue) that give off both an air of freshness and luxury. Under these facades is very easy to find giant terraces where you can enjoy the sun and the views while drinking a soda. The other areas of Figueira da Foz are much more touristy. In this town itself, there are huge brick towers and traditional low Portuguese houses. There are also giant avenues and vast squares. It is a completely tourist town and all that reallly remains of the Portuguese tradition is its center. By the way, the beach of this place is spectacularly large and the sunsets are really impressive.
