Gorgeous views
Popularly known as the lighthouse of Port Ellen (easier to pronounce than the original name in Gaelic), this lighthouse is a Victorian (nineteenth century) reconstruction of what stood here before. It is not precisely in the town of Port Ellen, but is right in front of the beacons signalling the entrance to the bay, which is notable for its particularly deep waters.
Usually when we talk about a lighthouse, we think of a circular structure, but here it seems more like a castle! It consists of two square towers, identical twins with different functions, one as motor and storage and the other as the lighthouse itself.
To access it you have to go through a very narrow path over the rocks that requires a bit of care and attention to avoid ending up in the water. On a clear day, the views of the bay and the cliffs are gorgeous.
