The idea of building a temple up in the mountain of the Tibidabo was born in the 19th century. The Holy Hear Temple was started in 1902 and finished in 1961. It is a huge building of neo-Gothic style and crowned by a bronze statue of the Holy Heart. A lift allows climbing to the higher part of the temple where you can enjoy some fantastic views of Barcelona. It this building the entrance of Baroque style stands out. The attractions park of the Tibidabo is just next to the temple.

Turning your back on the sea, you can see this monument in the mountain. Its dimensions are not extraordinary but its location turns it into one of the most visible monuments of Barcelona.

One of the most beautiful sights of Barcelona at night is the illuminated Temple, its clear and dazzling silhouette illuminates the dark nights of the city. The mountain where it is located belongs to the Sierra de Collserola, green lung of the province and protected park for forgetting about stress.

In order to go to the temple in public transportation there are different options but the cheapest and most comfortable one is to take bus T2A in Plaza Catalunya (in front of the Caja Madrid building) or T2B in the Vall d'Hebrón. They are shuttle buses leaving you just next to the Temple or the attraction park next to it. It costs 2.80€ and takes half an hour. It leaves every 20 minutes approximately, dropping you off at a square and you just have to walk about five minutes down a pedestrian street located on a light slope.

This temple is an impressive church at the top of the highest hill in Barcelona: el Tibidabo. It was designed by the architect Sagnier i Villavecchia and finished by his son, since it took almost sixty years to be built.

The Protestants had wanted to build a temple for a long time there, and when the owner of the land ceded it to San Juan Bosco (known as Don Bosco), he donated it to build the Holy Heart of Jesus temple. It is the third one of this type, with the Holy Heart of Rome, also built by Don Bosco and the Holy Heart of Paris, that also dominates the city from the Montmartre hill. Back then the location was rather rural, but in 1888 with the Universal Exposition down in the center, the Vallvidrera road was built, as well as a pavilion now used as an observatory.
