1 review of Sound of Iona

Nice history and landscapes

It takes less than ten minutes to get from the island of Iona to Fionnphort by boat today, but some 1,500 years ago it wasn't nearly so simple, with the strong currents and harsh winds. But this spot, known as the Sound of Iona, is of great importance as this is where St Columba arrived from Ireland in the fifth century, bringing Christianity to Scotland. Today you can cross by sailboat, and you're sure to appreciate the difficulty that the saint would have faced so long ago!

Interestingly, according to local chronicles, the sea changed color when the saint crossed. It is true that the water changes color here a lot, as you can see from my photos.
