La estación arqueológica está al borde del Río Águeda, cruzando el puente. No es casualidad que se encuentre aquí uno de los más importantes conjuntos de grabados arqueológicos paleolítico al aire libre de toda Europa. ya que es una zona de paso y abrevadero permanente de animales, principal fuente de sustento de los hombre primitivos.
Junto con el vecino enclave de Foz Côa, en Portugal, abarca más de 1500 grabados de nuestros ancestros. Fue declarado Patrimonio Mundial en 2010 por la UNESCO, y las visitas están muy bien organizadas, por lo que recomiendo hacerlas con el guía, son 5€ y la entrada incluye la visita al Aula de Interpretación de la Estación Rupestre y al Yacimiento Paleolítico, donde se visitan 5 grupos de rocas, y los grupos son pequeños, de unas 12 personas. La visita dura una media hora.
También hacen visitas nocturnas, por el mismo precio, y a la luz de las linternas se aprecian detalles que pasan desapercibidos a la luz del día.
En el yacimiento hay 94 grupos de rocas con más de 500 representaciones de animales y signos que no han sido descifrados. Hay ciervos, y otras especies de la última era glacial, hoy extinguidas, como los renos y bisontes.
Siega Verde está incluida también dentro del Itinerario Cultural del Consejo de Europa "Caminos de Arte Rupestre Prehistórico", que engloba a lugares rupestres prehistóricos visitables de España, Portugal, Francia, Italia, Irlanda, Suecia y Noruega.
Recomiendo visitar también la parte portuguesa, con grabados similares a los de Siega Verde, pero mucho más numerosos.
