Cool creative space in Tetuan
Espacio Naranjo is an alternative cultural space in Madrid's sprawling working class neighborhood of Tetuan. Situated in an old industrial workshop, Espacio Naranjo hosts exhibitions, performances, concerts, micro-festivals, and installations from a wide variety of national and international artists.
I first went to Espacio Naranjo for a concert/party on a Sunday afternoon and I was totally surprised that a space like this existed. I live in Tetuan and I can assure you that it's a decidedly uncreative, grey, and industrial area, so it was a shock to find this oasis of bright graffiti, interesting music, and DIY ethos, just the kind of place I had always hoped would blossom in the area.
The space has a lounge area and a main hall where concerts and performances are held, was well as seven separate studios for artists in residence (the studios are also usually open to visits). Everything is totally free (unless they're raising funds for a specific cause) and it's a great place to check out Madrid' artistic underground, meet creative people from the neighborhood, and just have a look around.
