Lago Escondido

Après les 20 minutes de marche sous les bambous du sentier, on arrive enfin au petit lac Escondido. Plus une lagune qu'un lac, de par sa taille, on ne peut ni y plonger, ni ypêcher ni y faire aucune activité nautique. L'eau limpide et profonde, parfois même transparente, est donc l'une des plus pures qu'il soit. Un paysage à couper le souffle, surtout quand le silence s'invite.

After 20 minutes of walking in the bamboo trail, we finally arrive at the small lake Escondido. More than a lagoon lake of its size, can neither plunge or ypêcher or there make any boating activity. The clear, deep water, sometimes transparent, is one of the purest kind. A landscape breathtaking, especially when silence prompt.

En diciembre de 2007 hice un viaje por la Patagonia argentina, han pasado más de 5 años pero aun recuerdo ese viaje con todo detalle y muy especialmente una jornada que hicimos por los bosques y lagos en la cordillera, guiados por una empresa de turismo de aventuras llamada Ushuaia Outdoors. Salimos de Ushuaia por la carretera que va hacia el norte, atravesando la cordillera. La primera parada fue en el mirador del Paso Garibaldi, con vistas espectaculares de los lagos Escondido y Fagnano y también sobre grandes extensiones de turberas. Desde allí cogimos un carril hacia el lago Fagnano, un lago inmenso casi un mar, e hicimos un pequeño recorrido andando por la orilla. Luego seguimos en coche hasta un punto donde iniciamos una caminata hacia el lago Escondido. De los tres guías que nos recogieron uno continuó en el coche hacia el punto final y los otros dos siguieron con nosotros. Los bosques de Tierra del Fuego son preciosos, están formados por lengas y guindos (especies del género Nothofagus, las hayas del hemisferio del sur), a menudo estos árboles están cubiertos por líquenes y recuerdan los bosques élficos del Señor de los Anillos. Una gran parte del recorrido la hicimos siguiendo una senda que bordea el lago Escondido, en el camino tuvimos la oportunidad de probar el pan de indio, un hongo que crece sobre los troncos de los árboles y servía de fuente de vitaminas a los yaganes, los indios autóctonos de estas tierras. El árbol crea una especie de callo alrededor del hongo, que se utiliza para hacer piezas de artesanía. También nos enseñaron el calafate en flor, un arbusto espinoso de flores amarillas que en el mes de febrero produce unas bayas moradas. Dice la tradición que el que come los frutos del Calafate, tiene que volver a Patagonia. Nuestros guías nos enseñaron una castorera, con su dique y la laguna artificial, y también vimos algunos troncos cortados por los afilados dientes de los castores. Esta especie fue introducida en Tierra del Fuego con el fin de sacar un beneficio con sus pieles, pero al final se ha convertido en una plaga, encharcando muchas zonas y produciendo la muerte de los árboles. Por supuesto no faltó una paradita en el camino, con un mate y alfajores argentinos. Hubo un momento que teníamos que pasar un arroyo, con cierta corriente, y el único puente era un tronco de un árbol. A mi me daba pánico, pero ante la perspectiva de quedarme allí no tuve más remedio que pasar. Al final de la caminata llegamos al punto que nuestros guías denominaban el refugio, no era más que un par de tiendas y unos bancos de madera a orillas del lago, donde nos esperaba el tercer guía con una lancha y estaba preparando un asado. Fue un almuerzo de lo más agradable, comiendo la carne asada en el fuego, acompañada de una jarra de cerveza y al final un café. Como hacía frío resultaba imprescindible comer alrededor de la hoguera. Luego cruzamos el lago en una zodiac; en la orilla opuesta ya estaban las puertas de la civilización, había un hotel, con restaurante junto a la carretera y nos esperaba el coche. Aún tuvimos tiempo de dar un paseo en canoa y contemplar el paisaje impresionante de bosques y montañas. Junto al lago paseaban los cauquenes, una especie de ganso típicamente patagónico. Por la tarde después de un pequeño descanso, ya regresamos a Ushuaia.

In December 2007 I traveled to Patagonia Argentina, has been more than five years but I still remember that trip in detail and especially a day that we did for the forests and lakes in the mountains, guided by an adventure tourism company called Ushuaia Outdoors. We left Ushuaia on the road north, through the mountains. The first stop was on the roof of Paso Garibaldi, with spectacular views of the lakes Escondido and Fagnano and also large tracts of peatland. From there we took a lane to Lake Fagnano, a huge lake near a sea, and did a small tour walking along the shore. Then we drove to a point where we begin a walk to Lake Escondido. Of the three guides we picked one went in the car to the end point and the other two followed us. The forests of Tierra del Fuego are beautiful, are made up of beech and cherry trees (species of the genus Nothofagus, beech southern hemisphere), often these trees are covered by lichens and Elven forests reminiscent of Lord of the Rings. A large part of the tour we made following a path along the lake Escondido, in the way we had the opportunity to try the Indian bread, a fungus that grows on the trunks of trees and served as a source of vitamins to Yagan, the Indians native to this land. The tree creates a kind of callus around the fungus, which is used to make handicrafts. They also taught us the caulk in bloom, a thorny shrub with yellow flowers in February produces purple berries. Tradition says that whoever eats the fruits of Calafate, must return to Patagonia. Our guides taught us all a beaver dam, with its dam and artificial lake, and we also saw some logs cut by the sharp teeth of beavers. This species was introduced to Tierra del Fuego in order to make a profit with their skin, but by the end has become a plague, puddled many areas and causing the death of trees. Of course not missed a stop along the way, with a mate and Argentine alfajores. At one point we had to spend a stream with some current, and the only bridge was a trunk of a tree. I really was scared, but at the prospect of staying there I was forced to go. At the end of the walk we reach the point that our guide called it the shelter, it was only a couple of shops and wooden benches by the lake, where we expected the third guide with a boat and was preparing a roast. It was a most enjoyable lunch, eating roast with fire, accompanied by a pitcher of beer and a coffee at the end. It was cold, it was essential to eat around the campfire. After crossing the lake in a zodiac, on the opposite bank and were the gates of civilization, there was a hotel, a restaurant next to the road and waited for the car. Still have time to take a canoe ride and admire the breathtaking scenery of forests and mountains. Lakeside walked the geese, a species typically Patagonian goose. In the afternoon after a short break, we're back to Ushuaia.

Arrivare fino alla Terra del fuoco può essere un'esperienza di viaggio molto faticosa, ma tanto sforzo viene immediatamente ripagato. Dopo 10 ore di viaggio in uno scassato autobus cileno da Punta Arenas arrivare a Ushuaia sembra essere l'unico desiderio...perfettamente vero...se non che non ci può perdere quella luce primaverile così magica nelle terre dell'estremo sud. Quando il giorno sta per morire e la notte per arrivare...lì c'è quella luce perfetta che ti sta aspettando!

Get up to Tierra del Fuego can be a very tiring travel, but much effort is immediately paid off. After 10 hours of travel in a broken-down bus from Punta Arenas Chile to arrive in Ushuaia seems to be the only true desire ... perfectly ... except that there can not lose that light in the spring so magical lands of the south. When the day is going to die and night to get there ... there's that perfect light that is waiting for you!
