This large equestrian statue dedicated to Ibn Qasi, Senhor de Mértola and dated 1144-1147, is a rider with helmet and light armor riding his horse holding up the left leg. According to popular belief if the horse has one front leg raised, the rider was wounded in battle or died as a result of war wounds, so probably this was the fate that befell this valorous knight who still watches over his land from of the cliff where there is also the fortress.

Excellent
The statue reminds us that the Almoravids had occupied this region of Portugal, very close to Spain. Ibn Qasi this Sufi master, was rvolt against the central government and would be the origin of the split between Andalusia and Portugal. There is a theory about the equestrian statues according to the position of the legs of the horse: the statue is here so instead we believe the warrior is coming out of the fortress, ready to provoke us.
