Equestrian Monument of Diego de Almagro

We noticed this statue in Plaza Mayor, it is in front of the theater and is surrounded by a small garden. Its the only statue in the city center and is a symbolic of the city. This is Diego de Almagro, as he was born illegitimate they gave him the name of the city as his last name. The unfortunate teenager found his future in the New World where he shared in Pizarro's conquest of the Inca Empire and discovered Chile. Pizarro's envy led him to betray him while he was ill and he was executed in Cuzco. It is an example of overcoming that the city is very proud of. The statue was made by Joaquin Garcia Donaire in 1954 who won a competition (organized by the Institute of Latin American Cooperation).
