El Gargantón

The guys from “Action Vera” took us on a descent down the Gargatón gorge. It’s an amazing experience that takes you by the stair-step terraces of the Guijo de Santa Bárbara (they’re incredible but forgive me for not bringing my camera…an expensive reflex camera and waterfalls are not a great mix!). The Gargantón starts around 1650 meters above sea level and finishes at the Garganta Jaranda near where we parked. It’s a great place for first-time canyoners although the prospect of jumping into the water from 25 feet up did give some of our group a moment of pause. I’d definitely do it again.

To begin with, we took our first canyoning adventure with “Action Vera,” a local company that does adventure trips and activities in the La Vera region. The day we went was a bit cloudy and the water was rather cold, but the descent down the gorge was unforgettable.

Doing El Gargantón was my first experience canyoning and I have to say that I fell in love with it. I’m not sure if it was the fact that the river was swollen with water or the amazing landscapes or the simple fact that I survived, but I really had a lot of fun. To all of you wishing to try your luck jumping off the cliff into the water, well, I say go for it!
