El ancestral Polé

Polé es el nombre de un asentamiento maya establecido a partir del año 200 DC, y tuvo se esplendor entre el período correspondiente del 1200 al 1550. Ocupó varios kilómetros de litoral de la Rivera Maya, funcionó como un puerto de partida y puerto de embarque hacia Cozumel, donde los mayas peregrinaban para adorar a Ix Chel, diosa de la fertilidad y de la luna. Aún se pueden observar restos de murallas, lo que se concluye que al igual que Tulum, fue un sitio amurallado como protección de los ataques que venían del mar. Su estilo arquitectónico corresponde al "Costa Oriental", que se caracteriza por la ornamentación con pintura en las fachadas, entablamientos, dinteles remetidos, jambas y muros interiores de los templos. Varios edificios estuvieron recubiertos de estuco tanto al exterior como al interior. El color rojo fue el predominante de este destacado puerto. Este antiguo asentamiento está dentro de los límites del parque ecológico Xcaret y confirma su existencia como ciudad de importancia marítima, económica y religiosa.
