Alembic
We were searching the net for sights to visit in Periana, when we found a mid-nineteenth century Alembic bar. Many of the billages of Axarquia have aguardiente, although some are not still small stills producing for local consumption in local houses. We saw a small square and the Alembic bar, and thought that it should be or perhaps was in a museum catalogue. We asked a man at the door and he said it was the same bar. It looks like it is stuck in time, like the old photograph, with a radio from the last century and the peculiar smell native to the taverns of those towns. We were kindly invited to the bottom of the bar, where we entered a small courtyard where the Alembic was, as it had been since the tavern was founded more than 130 years ago.
