The Hidden Chapel

Excellent

In the woods behind Dunstaffnage Castle you find a chapel of the same name, built by Duncan MacDougall shortly after the castle was built. The truth is that it is not common to find chapels in the castle, as they were vulnerable to assaults and attacks. However, this chapel was built by an extremely religious man and the secluded location of this hidden chapel explains his taste for privacy and life away from his main focus which was the castle. Keep in mind that in 1231 Duncan MacDougall founded the Ardchattan Priory which is about 10 kilometres from the castle. Nowadays a visit to the priory is included as part of the tour of the castle and its ruins.

It is said that the restoration work should start after finishing the castle, but this chapel is owned by the Campbell family, not the Scottish government, which could end up in being left undone. The walk from the castle to the chapel, through the woods, does not take very long but is very nice. You have to be careful because you can't see the chapel from the castle so it's easy to pass by it.
