Fascinating and mysterious
This megalithic building, dating back to the Iron Age, is about 9 miles from the town of Shiel Bridge (1 ½ hours by bus from Fort William). Its name, 'broch', comes from the Scottish word 'burgh' which means something like "office building". Archaeologists can't be sure of its function, but they speculate that the fortification was used in tribal clashes. On the site there is an interesting explanatory panel with a reproduction of the original internal structure of the broch, along with some historical notes.
