Rooftop pool
We are not normally Doubletree people, but there is a plethora of hotels in Panama City and competition is fierce, meaning we grabbed this sweet spot for less than $60. The seven-story hotel is in a quiet, upscale neighborhood between El Cangrejo and the waterfront, and there is an in-house restaurant and several fancier places to eat nearby. Rooms are clean and quiet, and the bed is fantastic. Best of all was the rooftop pool, where you could swim, soak in the hot tub, and look down on the cathedral and out at the never-ending range of skyscrapers that mark the city.
