Precursors of Modern Cleaners
It is the main laundry of the city. The Dhobi are the precursors of modern cleaners. They tend to pick up clothes and return them washed and ironed after 1 or 2 days. The clothes are washed by hand, using the traditional method of hitting the garments against large stones and there is also a kind of machine that is more of a drum with hole to spin the clothes. After the clothes are hung on a huge clothesline, which is curious it must be said because they do not use "clips" to hang the clothes; they uncoil the ends of the rope and clothes hang in between. The clothes are then ironed with huge coconut carbon plates that weigh a lot.
