Derinkuyu Underground City

The most mysterious and evocative thing about Derinkuyu underground city is its narrow, winding passageways. You never know where you'll end up. Often the passage just get very narrow or branches into several, or ends in a round stone door bolted closed. Now with tourism, most of the corridors are lit, but it does not take much to imagine a time when the troglodytes only had a torch to guide them in this maze of passageways and stairs going up and down. The perfect place for a horror movie!

If you're claustrophobic, don't do it. But still, it's quite a cool experience! Derinkuyu is a city that was built as a refuge for a people during the time of the invasion. It has the capacity to hold thousands of people who could stay for months at a time just to confuse the enemy. It was perfectly calculated and supplied with everything the people needed to survive: water, food, and even animals. The city had 11 levels, the latter of which have not been excavated, and only 4 are open to the public.
