Busy square
The city's centre is this large, 18th century square that was once called "Plaza de Colón", but is now called Derek Walcott square in honour of the poet, writer and local playwright who received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1992. It's a busy square because the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception , the Central Library and the city's main shopping street, [poi = 111 118] Brazil Street [/ poi], are all nearby.
The plaza itself is a park full of beautiful gardens (with the so-called Samaan Tree , a 400 year old tree) and several monuments, including one honouring the fallen soldiers of WWI, and the busts of Walcott and compatriot Arthur Lewis (both Nobel laureates). There is a bandstand in the middle of the square. The park is fenced and closes at 3:00pm. It's prohibited to walk on the grass.
