A Church Swallowed Up by the Sand
The Church of San Lorenzo, the patron saint of all seafarers, was built probably in the second half of the 14th century. It was the largest church in the Vendsyssel region. The sand that characterized the beautiful landscape was pushed by the wind for many years and it began to bury the church in the 16th century. The church congregation dug a path so that its parishioners could attend services. The fight against the sand continued until 1795 when the church was closed by royal decree. Today only the tower of the old church is still visible.
