Dawson Creek: Gateway to Alaska
Dawson Creek is located in Northeastern British Columbia, Canada. The small community of 12,000 residents has plenty of hotels, restaurants, and things to see and do all year round. There's always something going on in this small community. Be sure to visit the Northern Alberta Railway (NAR) Park located on Alaska Ave. There's the Information Center which was an train station, one of the most unique art galleries I've seen. It is a refurbished grain elevator turned into an art gallery. The Mile Zero Cairn is located on the south west corner, indicating the beginning of the Alaska Highway. As you explore downtown just footsteps away from the NAR Park is the Mile Zero Post (intersection of 10 Street & 102nd Ave), if you dare to flirt with danger you're going to want to get a closer look. Right on the corner is the Alaska Highway House which houses artifacts from the construction of the highway. Going along 10 Street is an empty lot with some historic resemble. This lot is where the Alaska Hotel stood. It was sadly burned to the ground in September 2012. There are plans of rebuilding the hotel. There are many events in Dawson Creek, including a car show and shine, music festivals, holiday events and my favorite; Rodeo Weekend. This is when the town converges on the Rodeo Grounds just west of the city. There is different rodeo events; chuck wagons, barrel racing, bull riding to name a few. The midway is always pretty busy, there are quite a few food booths offering different types of cuisine.
