Darjiu Citadel

The citadel of Darjiu is the main defense of this small Transylvanian Saxon village. The Saxons are a people ve came from Germany to populate these distant lands donated by the King of Hungary. It was to defend against invasions. Then Darjiu was built with a fortress from the 15th century in order to house the entire population there, in the event that something happened. Each family general had a room to put all of their valuable items and to close them in if an enemy ever came. Saxons also had quite a few advantages like not paying as many taxes as the Romanians, or not to be dominated by a count, living with more freedom, and subsequently, they left as the richest in the medieval times, more than any people of Romania.

The Citadel is part of the UNESCO world heritage. No charge for admission but you can leave a donation.
