The owners are incredible
What's a hotel without the people who run it? Nothing - however beautiful it might be, it's like an empty vessel missing its soul. In the case of Dar Tarrae, a small hotel hidden away in the magical medina of Chefchaouen, its owners, Bilal and Cosimo, made me want to stay there forever. The rooms are great and all overlook a tiled courtyard. I walked a lot around the medina and took pictures, but I always came back. In the evening, Bilal lit a fire for me and he, myself, some Moroccans and other travelers all spoke in a mishmash of languages, a kind of impromptu Esperanto. At night Cosimo - Italian to the core, but settled in Morocco - took over.
He offered a chickpea soup and some homemade spaghetti with garlic and tomato sauce, all washed down with a glass of Chianti. He brought dinner to my room on a tray, while I sat on the carpet in front of the fireplace. I stood there, watching the fire and listening to the thunder rumbling in the distance. I'd love to go back!
