D. Duarte Square
The Square D. Duarte is named after the statue that is found here of the King of Portugal (1391-1438) and is located in the historic center of the city. Of all the buildings my personal favourite was the residence of the painter Almeida e Silva which had a frieze of paintings by artists portraying al kinds of different illustrious countrymen. On the right hand side is a sinister silhouette of the old tower of the Alcazaba and the magnificent Balcony of the Canons of the Cathedral (at the back), and climbing just a few meters away is the beautiful square of Mercy with the Cathedral of unparalleled nobility, the Basque Grau Museum and the inspiring Church of Mercy.
