The current city of Pompeii is situated to the west of the ruins of ancient Pompeii, in the Sarno River plain at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. The current Pompeii was established and developed during the 19th Century and the census of 2007 was that the population was 27,000 inhabitants. It was initially named Pompei Valley, and it developed around the shrine of the Virgen del Rosario, one of the main centers of pilgrimage in southern Italy.
