Crossraguel Abbey
The beautiful ruins of this abbey, located in Ayrshire, not far from Glasgow was founded due to a controversy. It was founded in 1244 by Count Carrick. The Count donated the money years before to the monks of Paisley Abbey to build it, but they only built a small chapel. Following a complaint to the Bishop of Glasgow, monks (Benedictines of Cluny order) were forced to build the abbey. In 1307 the abbey suffered a sacking by the troops of King Edward I, was rebuilt but its activity was never the same, until it was abandoned at the time of the Scottish Reformation in the sixteenth century. It is presently cared for by the Scottish Historic (Scottish government) and is adjacent to one of the roads leading to the Borders or the area further South in Scotlan, passing the town of Maybole.
