A Special Place
The Cross of Arrate, located 550 meters above sea level, is a special place in the vicinity of Mount Arrate. Even though there are nearby mountains such as Akondia and Kalamua, there is no other mountain with a better view of the valley that the Ego Rio sculpts in its way to Eibar..
Due to the proximity of this grassy hill to the impressive sanctuary of the Virgin of Arrate, the Cross of Arrate is a popular place for tourists, hikers and the people of Eibar.
In fact there is still a popular belief that says that you must circle the cross three times while praying to the Virgin of Arrate in order to get a boyfriend or girlfriend.
It is worthwhile to walk up to the Cross of Arrate from the sanctuary. In less than five minutes you can reach, passing a beautiful forest of beech tress, the grassy summit of this illustrious hill.
Along the path you can find wooden benches and chairs, where you can usually see families enjoying a day in nature. At the top of the hill there is a commemorative plaque with the name, last name and date of the great “exploit” that took place when a car circled the cross for the first time.
Recently the news of the finding of a prehistoric fountain, in the area where the Cross of Arrate is located, has been published. This will no doubt delay a project that plans to build a viewpoint in the area of the cross.
Personally, I prefer that things are maintained the same way: the hill with its impressive cross, along its mythical steps, a well kept garden and the thousands of green tones that make up this magical place. By the way, cloudy days are perfect to take some pictures full of mystery of the beech forest!
