Most important
One of the most important historical buildings in Philipsburg is the courthouse, which is located in the central Wathey Square on the corner of [poi = 111494] Front Street [ / poi] (the main street). The building was constructed in 1793, and since then, it has had various uses. It has been the jail, fire station, and post office. The facade is made of painted wood slats. Above the front door there is a balcony off the first floor.
On the top there is a clock that chimes the hour. Up on the roof there is a curious pineapple, the welcome symbol. The original pineapple was destroyed by a hurricane and the current one was built by Frank Gonsalves in 1996. The Tourist Market and the New Testament Baptist Church are located behind the courthouse.
