The Saxons settled in the region from the twelfth century and are still fairly closed communities, Romanians living on their side, and they on theirs. Political and economic changes do not affect this región much. They are somewhat isolated from the rest of the country.
In the fifteenth century, weekly markets begin on the church grounds, and a one-day festival on St. Bartholomew´s patrón saints day. That´s why the town wanted a church as beautiful as those of the neighboring towns, such as Biertan for example. It was a test of their economic importance. The defensive wall dates back to the sixteenth century.
