En la zona del Casco antiguo de la Magdalena, después de subir una cuesta empedrada con varias casas albergues de peregrinos y restaurantes, nos encontramos con un edificio de piedra y justo enfrente un cementerio con tumbas antiquísimas de piedra. La niebla aún no se ha levantado, y aunque el lugar está solitario y mis compañeras se han ido adelantando y el sitio es un tanto tétrico por la hora y la niebla, no me resisto a fotografiarlo y leer la reseña que tiene en la puerta.Es el convento de la Magdalena o antigua Iglesia de la Merced, un edificio levantado sobre el 1200, cuando dos religiosos italianos de la congregación de la Penitencia de los Mártires de Cristo, que seguían la regla de san Agustín, viajaban en peregrinación a Santiago.Este convento se convirtió en un lugar muy celebre entre los peregrinos del medievo. La fachada es de estilo renacentista y guarda en su interior varios sepulcros y escudos de familias nobles. El claustro es románico de transición al gótico.

El Convento de la Magdalena lo fundaron como hospital de peregrinos unos frailes italianos, pero con la Desamortización de Mendizabal fue transformado en cárcel y cuartel. Los mercedarios se hicieron cargo de él a finales del s.XIX. De la construcción original del s.XIII sólo quedan fragmentos, como la puerta románica por la que se entra al claustro.
