The Church of San Francisco is within walking distance of the old convent of San Benito, off the walls surrounding the Citadel, and has been declared Property of Public Interest (IPP). It is the church of a former convent now defunct, founded in the thirteenth century under the protection of Queen Elizabeth (wife of King Dinis Portuguese) for the Franciscan order, although the legend, it was founded by Francis of Assisi himself returning from his pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. The building is of Romanesque origin, although it has undergone several renovations and reconstructions throughout its history, especially in the seventeenth century. So there are different architectural styles, as its cover, Mannerist style (made of stone in 1635, flanked by columns and topped by a large window at the top). In the last rehabilitation murals found in the apse and altar, probably of the fifteenth century. The temple is a rectangular nave, very bright due to large windows that break even part of the dome. Stresses the Chapel of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción, with frescoed ceiling and the altarpiece, neoclassical style (as the original was burned in a fire). The convent now houses the district of Bragança file, although in the nineteenth century settled in including a military hospital and then an orphanage.
